What Is Emotional Regulation, Really?
It doesn't mean not feeling things — it means knowing how to respond to what you feel.
Emotional regulation is often misunderstood as suppressing or controlling emotions. In reality, it's the ability to feel an emotion fully without being entirely run by it in the moment.
This might look like recognizing frustration rising and choosing to pause before responding, rather than either exploding or pretending you feel nothing.
Like most skills, it improves with practice — techniques like naming the emotion, slow breathing, or briefly stepping away from a situation can all help build this over time.
