Everyday Stress or Something More? Understanding Anxiety

Stress and anxiety can feel similar, but they behave differently. Here's how to tell the two apart.

Stress usually has a clear trigger — a deadline, a hard conversation, a busy week — and tends to ease once that trigger passes. Anxiety can behave differently: it can linger even after the stressful event is over, or show up without an obvious cause at all.

Common signs that anxiety may be going beyond typical stress include a persistent sense of unease, trouble switching off even during downtime, and physical symptoms like a racing heart or tight chest that don't clearly match what's happening around you.

Occasional stress is a normal part of life. But when worry starts to interfere with sleep, relationships, or daily tasks on a regular basis, it may be worth talking to a professional about what's going on.
